Community Impact and Innovative Initiatives
Jefferson is best known for founding Barbershop Speaks, a nationwide initiative that transforms barbershops and beauty salons into safe spaces for intelligent dialogue. Originally launched in Miami and now expanded to cities including Orlando, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York, the initiative fosters discussions on pressing social issues, breaks down generational divides, and empowers community members. Notable projects under this umbrella include:
Books for Free Program & Barbershop Bookshelves: Providing free access to books for children and helping them build personal libraries while waiting for a haircut.
Clippers of Care Initiative: Utilizing barbershops as donation drop-off points during natural disasters to mobilize community support.
Literacy Days: Events where community leaders read to children in salons, inspiring a love of reading and learning.
Additionally, as Chair of the Black Male Media Project (BMMP) and an active NABJ member, Jefferson has driven initiatives that expand the narrative of Black excellence:
BMMP 2020: Expanded the definition of "#BlackExcellence" by hosting panels like the Presidents Panel and Conversations with Cops, encouraging young Black men to aspire to leadership roles and fostering dialogue between the African-American community and law enforcement.
BMMP 2021: Facilitated in-depth discussions on the evolving relationship between Black men and law enforcement and the healthcare industry, reflecting on historical contexts and exploring strategies for future equity—especially poignant one year after the murder of George Floyd.
BMMP 2022: Themed “From Mugshots to Headshots… This Is My Story,” the event addressed negative media portrayals of Black men, featuring a keynote by Desmond Meade, a celebrated community activist whose journey redefined his narrative.
BMMP 2023: The Leadership Summit at Florida Memorial University brought together leaders from music, sports, business, and media for unfiltered dialogues on the challenges faced by young Black men, offering tools for personal and professional development.
